Memorial services for Carla Annette Brown, 40, of Norman will be at 9:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 11, at the First Christian Church with the Rev. Dr. G. Hugh Wilson officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Primrose Funeral Service.

Ms. Brown died Thursday, Nov. 7, at Moore.

She was born July 5, 1951, to Elvin and Doris Brown in Norman. A 1969 graduate of Norman High School, she was a licensed social worker, receiving her degrees from the University of Oklahoma. She recently returned from New Orleans, La., where she was the case manager for Resources for Adolescents Program at Children's Hospital, and was currently working as a social worker at Lode Star in Moore.

Preceded in death by both grandfathers, she is survived by her parents; a sister and brother-in-law, Rhonda and Daniel Bjork of San Antonio, Texas; two brothers, Randy of New Orleans and Doug of Moreno Valley, Calif.; two nieces, Bethany Brown of Moreno Valley and Mackenzie Souze of Chepachet, R.I.; her grandmothers, Ruth H. Brown of Wichita, Kan., and Allene Long Huxman of Quinter, Kan.; aunts, uncles and cousins.

The family has suggested the First Christian Church, 220 S. Webster, Norman 3069 as appropriate for memorial contributions.

I have three special memories of Carla from her time living in Washington DC.

I told Carla that I was returning to Norman for vacation. She immediately asked me to bring her a hamburger from the Boomerang. We all remember the great hamburgers they made. Of course she had her favorite and I was given instructions in detail concerning her order. As I left Norman for the airport for the return trip to Washington DC, I stopped at the Boomerang for her long-awaited burger. I placed the burger in a cooler filled with ice. The next morning I stopped by her office and delivered the prize. She was extremely happy and she couldn't wait until lunch; she headed to her lunch room and enjoyed not only the burger, but also the great memories it brought back.

I invited Carla to attend a dinner with President Ford. We were seated at a table with the Oklahoma delegation with some powerful people. The waiters brought the salads which included cherry tomatoes. She reached for her knife and fork and began to cut a cherry tomato in half. She failed to puncture the tomato with her fork and when she pressed with her knife, the juice from the tomato squirted across the table. Here we were, two people from Oklahoma, trying to act sophisticated. It did get a few laughs and it was a great icebreaker.

I attended a church five blocks from the Capitol. I invited Carla to attend a church service with me and she eagerly agreed. I normally sat in the middle of the church but for some reason we sat very near the front. We arrived a little early and people were beginning to be seated. As we talked Carla reached into her purse and retrieved a cigarette and cigarette lighter. I'm sure I had a shocked look on my face but about the same time she realized what she was doing and hurriedly put them way. I know we were both smiling and desperately trying not to laugh.

Carla led an interesting life. She always had a smile on her face.
